CANCER.
Of my mothers side of the family, out of 6 kids, only two are cancer free- my mother is thankfully one of them. Both of her brothers have prostate cancer and both of her sisters had breast cancer. Since the family is so cancer ridden, its pretty scary.
My mom and one of my aunts were talking last night and they were hypothesizing that their cancer could be linked to birth control. My aunts who had breast cancer were on birth control. My mother and other aunt werent on it for very long and they're cancer free. Again, scary.
Is there really a link to the two? I looked it up. And this is what the National Cancer institute had to say:
- A number of studies suggest that current use of oral contraceptives (birth control pills) appears to slightly increase the risk of breast cancer, especially among younger women. However, the risk level goes back to normal 10 years or more after discontinuing oral contraceptive use.
- Women who use oral contraceptives have reduced risks of ovarian and endometrial cancer. This protective effect increases with the length of time oral contraceptives are used.
- Oral contraceptive use is associated with an increased risk of cervical cancer; however, this increased risk may be because sexually active women have a higher risk of becoming infected with human papillomavirus, which causes virtually all cervical cancers.
- Women who take oral contraceptives have an increased risk of benign liver tumors, but the relationship between oral contraceptive use and malignant liver tumors is less clear. http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Risk/oral-contraceptives
And then theres diet. Rumor has it that theres a link between preservatives and cancer. Growing up we ate a lot of preservative full foods- spagettios, tv dinners, etc.. Again, Scary.
I didnt find any offical website like I did for the birthcontrol, but I did come across a bunch of studies and read their abstracts.. At about $30/study, the abtracts will have to do.
They all said the same thing. There IS a link. So now I've got to cut preservatives and eat as naturally as possible. everything from scratch! It may be too late for me, but I'm not going to be at fault if I help increase my kids' risks of cancer. Its probably going to be a little more expensivem but I will most def be starting the REAL FOOD diet. If I don't change their diet, knowing this information, I'm going to feel guilty as hell if they get cancer at a young age. Looks like I'm gonna be that hippie chick with a million kids...
But wait, theres more!
My research led me to an article on parabens and cancer. They don't have too much data on this, but there could be a possibility that some deodorants/antiperspirants can increase your risk of breast cancer. If its contains "oestrogenic formulants" theres a link. Theyre just unsure about the others in human. Not sure if its a risk I want to take.
So now I'm gonna be that stinky hippie chick with a million kids.
scratch that, just looked it up on the cancer institute site. there isnt a known link between deo and cancer. looks like i wont be stinky after all! phew!
Thanks a lot CANCER!!
NOT!
